De Doelen is a concert and conference venue that hosts approximately 600 concerts and 450.000 concertgoers annually. In 2022, the roof of this enormous building was transformed into a green oasis with a planted area the size of ten tennis courts.
A crate system has been installed beneath the plantings to collect approximately 2000 bathtubs' worth of rainwater. The roof features five insect hotels and 84 species of native herbs, bulbs, ornamental grasses, plants, and shrubs that contribute to increased biodiversity in the city. On the Schouwburgplein side, a 480 m² wooden deck is available for educational, social, and cultural activities.
The sustainable roof on De Doelen is one of the projects of Life@Urban Roofs, part of the European LIFE program for environmental and climate action. The roof contributes to the municipality of Rotterdam's ambitions in the areas of sustainability, climate adaptation, the creation of an additional 20 hectares of green space, and the restoration of biodiversity in the city.
