The Pompenburgflat, located on Doelstraat and Hofplein, was designed by architect Carel Weeber and completed in 1981. The building has recently been frequently in the news due to the large-scale redevelopment plans for this area. The Pompenburgflat, with 226 social housing units, is set to make way for RISE, the tallest new construction project in the Netherlands.
In 2025, the Rotterdam City Council approved a new zoning plan, paving the way for the demolition of the current residential building and the realization of RISE. This project comprises three residential towers, the tallest of which will reach a height of no less than 285 meters, and will house owner-occupied homes, hospitality establishments, shops, and a hotel alongside social housing. Developer RED Company has committed to rebuilding more social housing units than are being demolished.
Pompenburg Residential Building is a unique, robust U-shaped residential block consisting entirely of social housing. Due to the design with open galleries and the building's positioning, almost all apartments face south, ensuring ample natural light in every home. In the center lies a two-story covered parking garage, topped by a beautiful green communal courtyard. The complex is open to the west, and thanks to the four-story lower section on the side facing the Police Station, this garden catches plenty of sunlight. Thanks to the large plane tree that rises straight through the garage, even the residents of the highest apartments have greenery by their balconies.
During your visit to the Dakendagen, you can view this special inner garden.
