A river through a pipe

The pipe you see here is also underground. Water from the Rotte River flows through it, via the Steigersgracht canal towards the Leuvehaven and the Nieuwe Maas. This water used to flow through the Leuve Lock, which opened on Reconstruction Day 1950 (May 18th). However, the lock was filled in again in 1967 to make way for the road tunnel between Blaak and Westblaak. Now, the water flows underground in this pipe, and fish (such as sticklebacks and glass eels) even swim through it!
