The pipe you see here also runs underground. It carries water from the Rotte River, through the Steigersgracht, toward the Leuvehaven and the Nieuwe Maas. In the past, this water flowed through the Leuvesluis, a sluice that was opened on Reconstruction Day in 1950 (May 18). However, in 1967, the sluice was filled in to make way for the traffic tunnel between Blaak and Westblaak. Today, the water flows underground through this pipe. And even fish like sticklebacks and glass eels swim through it!
