Aesthetic simplicity of Wim Quist

The program Maritime Museum stands on a historic site where the city and harbor meet, with a window onto the river. The building, designed by architect Wim Quist opened in 1986. Like his other buildings, including the Theater Rotterdam Schouwburg, the museum was carefully thought out from start to finish: "Everything about a building has to be perfect." Quist developed the design in detail on grid paper. The route through the museum takes you via voids and ramps, offering panoramic views of the city and the harbor. Now, 40 years after its completion, new plans are underway. What role should Quist's original vision play in the transformation?
