Over the years, we in Rotterdam have begun to see water differently, both literally and figuratively. The harbors in the city center used to be very busy. Now, we can barely see the water between all the tall buildings. The Maritime Museum chose this painting from its collection to represent our "window on the river."
On the left of the painting, you can recognize harbor cranes and machines called shore elevators. These lift grain or other loose cargo from a ship. On the right is a ship belonging to the United Dutch Shipping Company (VNS). Behind it, the two towers of the Holland America Line headquarters, now the Hotel New York, are visible.
