Fresh air under the roof

This is an air scoop. It used to be located on the deck of a ship to bring in fresh air. A deck can be thought of as the roof of a ship. Roofs often also house equipment that provides the fresh air we need in buildings. Ships sailing to the Dutch East Indies had many air scoops on the decks and superstructures. Ships of the Holland-America Line needed fewer. This air scoop is now part of the collection of the Maritime Museum.
