Monument for the flood disaster in Zeeland (February 1953), 1957
Vincent Pieter Semeyn (Piet) Esser (1914-2004)
Bronze
Collection of the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam. Donation by the NV Firma Verolme
This sculpture was created in 1957 by Piet Esser to commemorate the 1953 North Sea flood. It depicts a man carrying a woman wrapped in blankets out of the water. It was donated to the municipality of Rotterdam by the shipbuilding company Verolme as a token of gratitude upon the opening of their new shipyard on the Botlek canal. The sculpture was intended for the garden of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, where it was placed between the ponds and close to the water.
The presentation of this image on the roof is once again thanks to Verolme, this time via the Verolme Trust.
