This square is a hot island

Large cities are increasingly affected by the urban heat island effect due to climate change: all that stone and concrete absorbs and retains heat. As a result, temperatures in cities can be 1 to 3°C higher than in the surrounding areas. And that’s not good for residents’ health. Plein 1940 is one of the hottest spots in the city, as you can see in this image. That’s because of all the paving on the square, the stone walls of the museum, the tall towers, and its south-facing location in full sun. The City of Rotterdam has launched a heat action program to raise awareness about the dangers of extreme heat and to cool down these urban hot spots. For example, by adding more greenery.
