Due to climate change, large cities suffer from the urban heat island effect: all that stone and concrete heats up considerably. Inside the city, it's 1 to 3°C warmer than outside. And on hot days, this is detrimental to the health of residents. Plein 1940, as you can see in this image, is one of the hottest places in the city. This is due to all the stone in the square, the stone walls of the museum, the tall towers, and its sunny south-facing location. The municipality of Rotterdam has a heat program to raise awareness of the dangers of heat and to address and cool these hot spots, for example, with more greenery.
