Public art in this city is provided by the Center for Visual Arts RotterdamThey put us in touch with versatile artist Herman LamersLamers explores the function and meaning of sculptures in a social context. His work incorporates abstract and realistic, poetic and concrete visual elements into architecture and/or space. The vibrant and alienating quality of the sculptures seen here contrasts beautifully with the classical, stately sculptures from the Boijmans Van Beuningen museum.
Herman Lamers:
Since 1990, commissions for sculptures and installations in public spaces have become increasingly important. They explore the meaning and function of the permanent presence of the sculpture in an environment. The sculpture adds a new interpretation to the space and thus confronts the existing architectural and functional identity.
The goal of my work is to activate the viewer's direct or indirect engagement with the image and the space. By making the work an integral part of the space, the viewer becomes part of that space. The aspects of "time" and "presence" have become important conceptual aspects in my work.
