House sparrows are becoming increasingly rare in the city. Vacant lots and rooftops offer opportunities for more suitable habitat. However, shrubs are needed there to provide shelter for the birds. Shrubs don't work well on rooftops due to their large root balls. This means a large container and therefore a lot of weight.
City shrub, an initiative of Walden Studio en Urban Nature Office For Citylab 010, research is being conducted into creative climbing aids that can transform climbing plants into shrubs that house sparrows will find at home in. But these shrubs need to be light-footed.
