Fish waste contains various substances that can serve as nutrients for plants, such as nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, and ammonia. These substances can be converted into nitrate and absorbed by plant roots, purifying the water. This provides plants with almost all the nutrients they need. The clean water is then pumped back to the tank containing the fish.

Livable city and climate
Do you want to work on climate change and make a city, village, or countryside livable by utilizing nature? Yuverta MBO's level 4 Livable City and Climate program trains you to become a supervisor and project manager in green spaces. There are plenty of jobs available after this program, and there are excellent career opportunities in urban green development, water management, landscaping and green spaces, and land and infrastructure. The Livable City and Climate program is broadly based and trains you to become a supervisor and project manager in green spaces. Upon completion, you can choose from one of four profiles:
- Urban Green Development (level 4)
In this profile, you'll learn how to transform an urban environment into a sustainable living environment with water and greenery. Do you care about the future of the planet? And are you interested in biodiversity and ecology? Then this program is perfect for you.
After completing the program, you'll work as a consultant or supervisor in an urban environment, for example, as an urban green developer or urban forest ranger. You'll conduct practical research, provide advice, and create designs and management plans. You could work for an ecological consultancy, a municipality, a green, innovative contractor, a green roof and facade developer, a social organization, a community garden, or an ecological gardener. Alternatively, you could continue on to a university of applied sciences (HBO) program, for example, in Urban Green or Urban Development.
- Water management (level 4)
As a water manager, you'll primarily focus on three issues: too much water, too much water, and too little water. Therefore, as a water manager, you'll never be solely concerned with water, but also with green spaces. And with everything that influences it, such as residents, soil, and climate. After completing the program, you'll be able to take water samples and soil analyses. You'll also be able to research flora and fauna and develop proposals for effective water management.
Water has always been present and will always have a place in our environment. A future as a water manager is therefore guaranteed. The work of a water manager is very diverse. In the future, you could focus on, for example:
- carrying out hydraulic engineering work;
- research and design of the outdoor environment (both urban and recreational);
- or working at water boards and government authorities.
You can also progress to a higher professional education program in Water Management, for example.
- Gardener (level 4)
This profile will prepare you for a Sustainable gardener of the future. You'll learn about soil, plants, technical innovations, living gardens, and living buildings. You'll also learn how to manage people and how to communicate with clients and other stakeholders. Besides gardens, parks, and green spaces, you'll also encounter adventurous green spaces.
After completing your training, you can work as a landscape gardener, for example, at landscaping companies, green space providers, or municipalities. You might even manage roof gardeners, interior landscapers, or flying gardeners.
- Green, ground and infrastructure (level 4)
This profile trains you as a work planner/project manager in green agricultural technology. You'll learn all about machinery and its impact on the soil and environment. You'll also learn how to be a key player in project implementation. You'll work in an environment where you'll create new infrastructure with nature, eco-friendly banks, water buffers, sports fields, and golf courses.
This course is taught in Amsterdam, Aalsmeer, Dordrecht, Houten, Rijswijk and Rotterdam.
