Rooftop Film Night x Roffa Mon Amour

Mobypark Delftsestraat parking garage - June 4

Enjoy a series of film nights (Thursday, June 4 to Sunday, June 7) under the stars on the roof of the Mobypark Delftsestraat parking garage. In collaboration with four well-known Rotterdam film organizations: Roffa Mon Amour, International Film Festival Rotterdam, LantarenVenster, and Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam, we are organizing film screenings with the Rotterdam skyline as a backdrop.

On Thursday, June 4, we are playing The Last Year of Darkness (2023) by Benjamin Mullinkosson in collaboration with Roffa Mon Amour. This film is a love letter to a club that holds a special place in the hearts of the youth of Chengdu (China).

About the movie

Funky Town is one of the last places where Chengdu's queer youth could still gather freely. The club is forced to close due to the construction of a new subway line. The Last Year of Darkness captures the profound lives of a group of clubgoers, DJs, and performance artists who regularly frequent the beloved club Funky Town. From euphoric dance scenes in neon light to deeper and darker moments of loneliness and longing, the documentary subtly reveals their desire to create a place of their own. We follow the life of Yihao, a drag performer, who hides deeper concerns about their existence and the role that drag and gender play in it behind fantastic makeup. We also meet Kimberley, a brilliant and acclaimed classical Zheng player who struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts.

Several languages are spoken in the film; the film is subtitled in English.

From 20:30 You are welcome on the roof for a drink with a view. To 21:30 the film begins.

Note

This program takes place outdoors and is not covered. The program will proceed in the rain; you are welcome to bring an umbrella or raincoat. The screening will only be cancelled in the event of dangerous weather, in which case all ticket buyers will be notified via email.

About the location

You might know this parking garage from the Red BMW by artist collective Kunst & Vaarwerk, which juts out majestically from the roof. Built between tall, mirrored buildings and reconstruction architecture, this is one of the rawest spots in Rotterdam. The perfect location for a film program that engages in a dialogue with its surroundings.
