Enjoy a Series of Rooftop Film Nights (Thursday, June 5 – Sunday, June 8)! Join us under the stars on the rooftop of Las Palmas for a magical series of film screenings. In collaboration with four major Rotterdam film institutions—Roffa Mon Amour, IFFR, LantarenVenster, and KINO—we’re presenting open-air films with the stunning Rotterdam skyline as the backdrop.
On Saturday, June 7, together with LantarenVenster, we’re screening the remarkable Oscar-winning animated film Flow (2024, 84 min), directed by Gints Zilbalodis.
You’re welcome on the rooftop from 8:30 PM for a drink with a view of the Nieuwe Maas. The film begins at 9:30 PM.
About the Film
Flow by Gints Zilbalodis is a breathtaking and wondrous odyssey following a young cat who, along with a group of unlikely companions, sets out in search of dry land in a world devastated by a catastrophic flood.
Humans have vanished, but the cat doesn’t seem to mind. The house with the cozy bed is still there, the river is full of fish, and the surrounding forest seems like one big playground—until the water suddenly begins to rise, and fast. The cat barely escapes aboard a passing sailboat. Along the way, a capybara, a dog, a lemur, and a bird join the journey. Together, they form an unlikely group that must learn to survive in this overwhelming new world.
Though Flow is only his second film, Gints Zilbalodis is already being hailed as the worthy successor to Hayao Miyazaki. In Flow, he creates a mythical, majestic world of sunken ruins, devastating storms, and looming forests. The animals and their magical journey symbolize something greater, while still remaining strikingly true to their natural selves. Animators studied hundreds of cat and animal videos to portray their behavior and communication as realistically as possible.
This groundbreaking animated film, a top contender on many Oscar shortlists, has been met with widespread critical acclaim and leaves audiences—both adults and children—in absolute awe. Flow is, in many ways, the most extraordinary film of the year.
