Depot Boijmans van Beuningen (2021) is the world’s first publicly accessible art depot. The Depot is designed by the architectural firm MVRDV. An aluminum bowl from IKEA served as inspiration for the building’s shape. The building is 39.5 meters high, has 7 floors, and is clad with reflective panels. These panels create a reduced reflection of the surroundings, allowing you to see over the surrounding buildings and making the building part of the environment.
On top of the building, you’ll find the museum café-restaurant and a real rooftop forest with 75 multi-stemmed birch trees, grasses, and sedum. The roof also has its own water retention system for watering the forest and the museum’s toilets.
