In 2018, the new part of the Erasmus MC was officially inaugurated. The hospital has opted for a ‘healing environment’ in the new building. This means plenty of daylight, greenery, and a warm, comfortable interior. The innovative hospital provides an environment that contributes to the recovery and well-being of patients and staff.

The most remarkable feature of the new green hospital is the rooftop gardens on the eighth floor. Designers Juurlink & Geluk designed the gardens as orchards with 38 walnut, apple, and pear trees on small hills. A pathway guides visitors along sheltered spots with benches, allowing them to enjoy views of Rotterdam in comfort. Patients who require equipment or cannot leave their beds can also be brought to the roof.

The rooftop gardens also serve a sustainable function. They capture and slow down the drainage of rainwater and help reduce heat stress.

The rooftop garden atop the Erasmus MC won the ‘Dakheld’ in 2017 during the Knowledge Day of the Rotterdam Rooftop Days, the award for the best rooftop development of the year.
